Safeguarding

Every day thousands of people participate in football as coaches, athletes, volunteers, referees and organisers.

For many, this is a positive experience that develops skills, knowledge, social networks, and confidence. However, the experience becoming negative for some, basic guiding principles need to be understood and implemented.

This section has been designed as a gateway to child protection and safeguarding for everybody involved in the delivery of football; including federation staff, coaches, volunteers, development professionals, parents and children themselves. It aims to encourage everyone to do their part to keep sport safe.

International Safeguards for Children in Sport was launched at the Beyond Sport summit in Johannesburg in October 2014. It details eight safeguards that should be put in place by any organisation working with children in sport.

These safeguards are already being piloted by organisations all over the world and are set to be adopted more widely.

The eight safeguards are:

Developing Your Policy

Procedures for Responding to Safeguarding Concerns

Advice and Support

Minimising Risks to Children

Guidelines for Behaviour

Recruiting, Training and Communicating

Working with Partners

Monitoring and Evaluation
